"Destination Dalí" The Dalí Museum Teacher’s Guide
The Museum’s Teacher’s Guide incorporates the "Get Surreal with Salvador Dalí" video, background materials for teachers, and several core lesson plans to help provide teachers and students with excellent opportunities to:
- think creatively and analytically
- read & write about the relationships between art, history & culture
- create and discuss original pieces of art
Designed to address FCAT, Sunshine State Standards, and Florida Writes! goals, "Destination Dalí" can help make Florida and non-Florida students' explorations of Dalí's life and art as educational and productive as possible. All of the images that "Destination Dalí" introduces to students — or images that address the same issues - are currently in the online gallery. The Museum has also made the Teacher's Guide available for free download and has included links to related lesson plans designed by other museums around the United States. Revised Dalí Lesson Plans at ACE/FAEA Link
As part of the 2004 Dalí Centennial, the Dalí Museum collaborated with June Hinkley from the Florida Department of Education and several exceptional Pinellas County visual arts teachers to redesign the Dalí Museum’s lesson plans found on our site. [Lesson Plans Link] The Lesson Plans were adapted for use in Visual Art, Language Arts, and Science classrooms. The adapted Lesson Plans are aligned with the Florida Sunshine State Standards. They include information on procedures, how to acquire materials, FCAT Connections, and Indicators of Success. The Lesson Plans are located on the ACE/FAEA website at the following address: http://www.faae.org/content/programs/Dali100/dali.asp
"DalíVision" Outreach Program
If your school can’t visit the Dalí Museum, then consider inviting the Museum to visit you. With a little advance notice — and with no cost to you — the Dalí Museum can schedule a trained docent to visit with slides or posters to best suit your needs. Museum docents regularly visit classrooms in Pinellas County, and can visit Pasco, Hillsborough, Sarasota and Manatee counties depending on availability. Contact the Education Department 727.823.3767 x 3028.
Your Ideas
The Museum is establishing an online archive of Dalí-related lesson plans and curriculum ideas. This archive will feature classroom-tested activities submitted by teachers and will be a free online resource for educators everywhere. If you have ideas or lesson plans that you think would be helpful additions to the Museum’s Teacher’s Guide, please contact the Museum. When we add to our online resources, we will include teacher and school profiles as well - not only to give authorial credit, but also to fill in the educational context behind each activity.
